Calitzdorp Cellar was established in 1928 and remained a distilled winery until the late 1980's. During the 80's, Sweet Muscadel and Hanepoot were our flagship wines, and these still do very well at wine shows. Our first port was made from Cabernet Sauvignon in the early 90's.

The first Merlot, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinotage, Tinta Barrocca, Touriga Nacional and Chardonnay were planted in the early nineties. The production of the cellar climbed from 2000 tons per year to 4000 tons in a 10 year period.

The cellar has been twice awarded the Champion Cooperative Cellar of the Little Karoo and performs very well at the SA Young Wine shows. The Hanepoot was the SA champion in 2008 and there were a few class winners such as Blanc de Noir and Jerepigo.

Alwyn Burger was born in 1958 in Montagu and grew up on a wine farm near the town where his grandfather was a winemaker.

After completing school, Alwyn worked as assistant winemaker at Oranjerivierwynkelders and then attended Elsenburg Agricultural College in Stellenbosch.

After successfully completing the 3-year course, Alwyn and his wife Dalena, who is a domestic science teacher, began their careers in Calitzdorp in 1990. They have a son who is currently studying.
